Response Questions Due Tomorrow!

by Mr Harrelson on February 22, 2012

Remember, Questions 1-5 on the Response page of the packet you received on Monday (click if you have misplaced yours) are due tomorrow.

Please write in complete sentences with your own original thoughts… of course, it would be great if you could answer these on a Google Doc and share them with me so that I can leave comments etc.

This will be the last grade for the 2nd Trimester and show me what you’ve gained from our readings and discussions of part 2 of TKAM, so impress me (and yourself)!

Is It President’s Day?

by Mr Harrelson on February 20, 2012

It’s always interesting to consider how we make, move and celebrate our national memorial days!

Why you should stop calling today Presidents’ Day – CSMonitor.com: “We don’t care what that mattress sale ad says – there is no such thing as a national Presidents’ Day. It’s a myth, like the story about George Washington chopping down a cherry tree and throwing it across the Potomac at Abe Lincoln.”

Here’s to our First President.

To Kill a Mockingbird at Asheville Community Theatre

by Mr Harrelson on February 20, 2012

We should get a group together to go see the Sunday show when the production starts!

Asheville Community Theatre » To Kill a Mockingbird: “April 20-May 6, 2012

Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30pm; Sundays at 2:30pm.

Maycomb, Alabama is the setting for this unforgettable story of a childhood in a sleepy Southern town and the crime that rocked it to its core.  A masterpiece of American literature, this adaptation remains true to the themes of kindness and cruelty, love and hatred, innocence and experience.  If you haven’t had the benefit of seeing this Pulitzer Prize winning novel portrayed onstage, don’t miss it.”

Let’s figure out a Sunday date that works for folks. Tickets start at $12… would be fun!

Tuesday’s Quiz, Work and HW

by Mr Harrelson on February 14, 2012

SquirrelValentine

TODAY’S OVERVIEW
1. Ch’s 6-7 Quiz
2. Read Ch’s 8-9 for Tomorrow
3. Preposition Songs Due Friday

Unfortunately, I won’t be at school today. However, we still have plenty to cover!

I have the Hall iMacs reserved for you in the morning for girls and both classes for guys (get iPads if you need them in the afternoon, girls).

——

*Here’s your quiz for chapters 6-7 (please answer these in paragraph form on a Google Doc and share it with me today by the end of school today).*

(Yes, you can use your book (please cite the page number if you do). However, please don’t use each other… this is meant to be an individual quiz. So please take this silently and thoughtfully.):

1. How has the character of Boo Radley changed? Do you still feel the same way about him as you did in Chapter 1? What insight does Miss Maudie give us about Boo Radley? (Chapter 6-7)

2. How does Miss Maudie begin to emerge as a character that represents strong womanhood? (Chapters 5-6)

3. Why is the knothole in the tree important? Why do you think the knothole in the tree has been plugged with cement? (Chapter 7)

For extra credit, you can make an awesome word search or make a crossword puzzle using character names, places and vocabulary words from To Kill A Mockingbird (at least 26 words). Make sure to print it out or save it somehow.

——

When you are finished, please read both Chapters 8 and 9. We’ll have a short quiz on those tomorrow as well (these are really interesting chapters and we’re almost finished with Part 1… in your head, compare the snowmen to Boo’s soap carvings!).

——

We also need to finish our preposition songs and have them either on your blog or in finished form by this Friday. We’ll present them next Monday in class.

——

I hope you all have a great day and enjoy Valentine’s! I’ll be around the laptop as much as I can, so feel free to email, IM or Skype if you see me online.

Enjoy (and stay away from the corn dogs)!

Remember to read pages 67-84 (chapters 6 and 7) tonight in To Kill a Mockingbird!

We’ll have a short 5 question quiz (with 1 retake possible) on these pages tomorrow.

If we have a snow day, we’ll still have the quiz and I’ll hop on a Google Hangout or Skype group vid to help you out.

Enjoy!
